Defiant Specimens

Preserved natural specimens have been collected for centuries for the study of natural history, human anatomy and the advancement of science. In the exhibition Defiant Specimens, the artworks of Susan Feindel and Cindy Stelmackowich strive to expand the materiality and visualization of scientific specimens. There is a special attention to wonder, speculation, vulnerability and the limits of human understanding and expression in their works. They blend images and ideas from nature, natural habitats, and old dictionaries and scientific textbooks that cross mediums and flip between the tangible and implied.
